Understand your true staffing requirement
Move beyond simple ratios or establishment numbers by considering service coverage, working patterns, leave, on-call commitments and other constraints.

Workforce — Staffing Analysis
Healthcare staffing requirements are rarely straightforward. Service hours, activity, leave, on-call commitments, skill mix and changing models of care all influence the number of staff required.
We build practical staffing models that bring these factors together, helping healthcare organisations understand current requirements, test different scenarios and plan services with greater confidence.
Move beyond simple ratios or establishment numbers by considering service coverage, working patterns, leave, on-call commitments and other constraints.
Understand how changes to operating hours, capacity, activity, service configuration or working arrangements affect workforce requirements.
Provide clinical and operational leaders with a transparent analysis to support workforce planning, recruitment, service redesign and investment decisions.
The analysis
We build flexible models around the realities of the service being analysed. Depending on the question, this can combine workforce and roster information with activity, demand and operational data to establish the staffing required under different scenarios.
Patient volumes, theatre activity, imaging demand, service schedules and expected future demand.
Required operating hours, locations, clinical areas, minimum coverage and skill mix.
Contracted hours, leave, non-clinical time, on-call commitments, rest requirements and other constraints.
Compare current arrangements with alternative staffing levels, service configurations and demand assumptions.
The factors driving staffing requirements vary considerably between clinical services. Anaesthesia may require modelling of theatre, ICU and on-call commitments; radiography may involve modality coverage, operating hours and imaging demand; while allied health services may be driven by caseload, activity and service coverage. Our models are therefore built around the service and the decisions being made rather than applying standard staffing ratios.
Staffing analysis can be undertaken as a standalone exercise or use data already available through MedModus solutions. Where appropriate, we can combine roster and workforce data with information from patient administration, theatre, radiology and other operational systems to build a more detailed picture of demand and staffing requirements.
Staffing model

Anaesthesia
Workplans, staffing data and three years of eRostering data combined into a flexible model of current and future anaesthesia staffing requirements.

Emergency Department
Modelling the roster itself showed that four SHOs, not three, were needed to deliver ED coverage alongside working hours, rest, weekend and leave requirements.

Anaesthesia
Scenario-based roster modelling showed the registrar staffing needed to remove 24-hour shifts while protecting rest, weekends and clinical cover.
